WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY, 2019

THANK YOU, WE EXCEEDED 321 SILLY SOCKS THIS YEAR! NEXT YEAR, LET’S TRY FOR 500!!

What is Down Syndrome (DS)? DS is a genetic condition affecting the mental and physical health of an individual. It is caused when someone is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21; known as trisomy 21. The extra chromosome causes mental and physical delays. This genetic condition affects one in 700 babies born to mothers before the age of 40 and one in every 12 babies born to mothers after the age of 40. Individuals with DS can usually be identified by their appearance and the mildness/severity of DS within an individual varies.

What is WDSD about? WDSD is about INCLUSION, ACCEPTANCE, KINDNESS, LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, POSSIBILITIES, COMPASSION, and RESPECT. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly decided WDSD would be observed yearly on 3/21. On this day, people are asked to wear their silly, crazy, or mismatched socks to raise awareness about DS. With the help of education and an environment of inclusion, individuals with DS can do amazing things, they are truly special people. Down syndrome means extra chromosome, extra awesome!

For WDSD 2019, B.U.I.L.DS challenged 321 people to wear their silly socks and send us a picture!! Well, we not only met our goal, but we more than exceeded it, we received 330+ people participating in this amazing cause, plus a few animals, and even two stuffed animals.

All the posts, pictures, videos, shares, and comments meant the world to us!! I hope you all enjoy the video as much as we did! You guys rocked, rocking your socks!! Thank you again! 💛💙🤟🏼🌎🧦#wdsd2019 #wdsd19#wdsd #builds #buildingupindividuals #lulu #lulurocks#downsyndromeawareness #extrachromosomeextraawes
